Talent is a pursued interest.Bob Ross
In other words,
anything that you’re willing to practice,
you can do.
For my first remix, I chose to remix a Bob Ross Quote I made for a daily create. It was serendipitous that this daily just so happened to coincide with the assignment, Minimalize Your Philosophy. Details for the original assignment are as follows:
“Pick your favorite quote OR make up your own phrase which describes a philosophy that you try to live by. It can be about love, friendship, family, education, culture, health, charity, etc. Design a minimalist poster depicting the concept. Extra challenge: Try to include a unique element that makes it YOU. Don’t forget to explain your thought process.”
I started this assignment by taking the quote I created (by which I mean the type design and getting an image of Bob from one of his episodes), and I simplified the image by doing an image trace on Bob. I then hit the remix on the original assignment to see how I was going to change it up!
The first remix I got was:
Minimalize Your Philosophy [Remixed]: Pretty In Pink
I say ‘first’ remix, because after I reworked my design, I came back to the remix assignment only to realize that I didn’t actually save the remix card for my post! The remix button always generates something different, so I couldn’t get back to it. I decided to just go with another remix I saw that looked interesting, since I thought that my first remix wasn’t particularly intriguing with just the addition of pink.
My second remix card:
Minimalize Your Philosophy [Remixed]: Jump Shrimp
After I changed up my quote to say a contradictory message, I then figured out the URL to get back to the “Pretty in Pink” card. So rather than having one remix, I ended up with a combined two remixes-in-one!
For the “Pretty in Pink” part of the assignment, I ended up choosing a dark pink because I just couldn’t get behind a light, pepto bismol color for Bob (he usually wore blue). I simplified colors and shapes even more and let some of the negative space bleed into the canvas. I liked the contrast of dark pink and black, but I wanted to keep some of the browns and blues to cool it down. Pink is a bright color, and as Bob Ross would say, “it’ll set your world on fire.”
As for the “Jump Shrimp” part of the assignment (why is it called that, I really want to know), I thought about what the opposite of the quote would be. Most people tend to think that you’re either naturally good at a skill, or you aren’t, so I went with the quote “Talent is a hereditary skill” as a contradiction to the original quote.
Finally, I switched Bob’s first and last name, because I just couldn’t bring myself to attribute the bad quote to Bob Ross! He would never tell someone that talent is inherited. It’s a bad, untrue quote, so look at my design and then put it out of your head forever! Talent is NOT an innate skill! You can do it if you believe.
My Bob Ross Quote remixed:
OK, now that you’ve seen it, you can now forget about this blasphemous quote. Let’s all put some good thoughts in our heads instead with this Bob Ross quotes remix called, “I believe,” originally remixed by Symphony of Science’s John D. Boswell for PBS Digital Studios.
