I had Sunday on a loop this week with the Visual Assignment, GIF Animate Your Day Like Ben. The description for this task is as follows:

“Ben Rimes regularly takes a day (February 2012 and December 2012) to capture key moments each as an animated GIF – as you go through a day look around and identify places, moments, things that are well represented in the infinite looping form. Assemble at least 5 of them to capture the essences of your day, start to end and publish as a single blog post, with narrative.

What does it mean to see your day in just this form?”

Seeing my day in GIF form is in some ways more real than just looking a still photo. Pictures can be deceiving- we think we remember what that moment in time was like, but we tend to look with nostalgia-covered glasses. When you look at a moment in GIF form, it feels closer to reliving the moment. It feels more ‘real.’

I started this assignment on Sunday and took pictures throughout the day of objects that I thought would be good in a looping format. I selected about 10 photos from each object to use for my GIF frames and organized them in Photoshop. I copy pasted all the photos into layers in one PS file and cropped them all to be the same size. I then did Timeline > create frame animation > make frames from layers. I set my time delays (depending on the object. Most look good with a .01 sec delay, but some need .02 and some 0). I also copy pasted frames that were already in the loop so that the GIF wouldn’t jump as much. So if I had 1 2 3 4 5 frames, I would paste 4 3 2 to the end of it. Finally, I exported as ‘save to web’ and did ‘128 GIF dithered’ and ‘looping forever,’ and made sure to preview my GIFs before hitting save.

10:15 am

I get out of bed and go downstairs to get my morning coffee. My parents wake up super early and have already had their cups of Joe. The coffee machine auto starts around 5 or 6 am, so by the time I have my coffee, it’s lukewarm. I’m not picky though, so I just pour my coffee and put a little bit of milk, half & half, oat milk (yes, that’s a thing), or whatever new creamer kick my mom happens to be on at the moment. After watching some documentary, she is now convinced that she can feel the dairy hormones from half & half and will only use non-dairy alternatives from now on. I’m fine with whatever tastes good. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

11:00 am

What am I still doing at the kitchen table? I have a really hard time getting moving at the start of the day. While I drink my coffee, I scroll through Facebook and read click bait articles. I forward anything I find funny or interesting to my boyfriend. Today is Sunday though, so I have an extra thing to look at – the Sunday comics (because you’re never too old to read comics). I usually skip over most of them and just read my favorite ones (‘Get Fuzzy,’ ‘Pearls Before Swine,’ ‘Brevity,’ ‘Pickles’). Sometimes there’ll be a humorous gem in the Sunday Funnies, but most of the time the jokes aren’t even jokes (and especially wouldn’t be funny to a kid). Who are these written for? I remember why I rarely read the comics anymore. #CantRelateToTheComicStripArtists

Hey birds! We all kind of forget you guys are over here in the living room, so I thought I’d say ‘hi.’ You guys sure do make a lot of noise though. You birds haven’t run out of things to talk about yet?

We have 5 parakeets in our house- Mr. Peabody, Bluebell, Professor Plum, Sierra Mist, and Colonel Mustard. We started with ice cream flavors, and as birds came and went, we eventually started naming them after ‘Clue’ characters. It’s kind of a long story how we ended up with so many pets (we have fish too). They are well taken care of, but sometimes taking care of a ‘zoo’ is a pain, and my mom often laments the fact that nobody wants these darn birds!

1:15 pm

Laundry time! …for someone in the house. It’s not my load in the dryer, although it could have been, and probably will be on some Sunday in the future. I only do laundry about once a month because I just don’t have the time. If I made an actual GIF of my day, it would just be a loop of homework. Doing these GIFs and typing up this post is homework! Case in point. I literally do nothing else. My room is a disaster zone. I haven’t slept since the 90’s. I live off of Ginger ale and Ritz crackers. And after I post this, I’m going to post my other homework for another class and then do some more homework.
Fun times.

But yeah! Look at that laundry go!

2:00 pm

I always make time to say ‘hi’ to my doggo’s throughout the day though! Look at how cute Doodle is. She is the sweetest baby. We never get tired of hugging on her. Her fur is so soft and curly. I love her blond eyelashes and her big paws.

After thinking about how cute my dogs are, I remember that I actually have work to do. I reluctantly make my way upstairs to sit at my computer. Doodle follows me up and nudges me with her nose. ‘Why are you hoomans always on this stupid thing? Play with me!’ She brings me rope toys and squeaky balls and socks with empty bottles in them to play with. I want to play with you, my sweet child, but I have hours to go before I sleep. And hours to go before I sleep.

2:00 pm to 10-something pm

Homework.

*Looks at the time*
Sh–sugar, I actually need to take a break so that I can get ready for bed.
*Keeps working*

11:45 pm

I zombie shuffle to the bathroom to brush my teeth and wash my face. I turn on the facet water and do my if-I-feel-like-it nightly ritual. I like this new face wash I bought. It’s a sugar scrub and it smells so good- ‘Sweet Mint & Eucalyptus.’ I heard on ‘Queer Eye’ that you should do a sugar scrub for chapped lips, so I thought I’d give it a try. I’m not really sure if it’s doing anything for my face/lips, but I like the scent so much that I use it anyway. Maybe I should make it a nightly routine instead of a if-I-feel-like-it routine to see better results.

Nah.

12:34 am

I know, I know, just let me type one more thing and then I’ll get to bed!

After winning the ‘1234’ contest on Facebook messenger with my boyfriend, I finish up my ds106 post. (If you see 12:34 on the clock, be the first to text 1234 to your significant other. It will become a daily race to be first and you will curse me for introducing you to this never ending loop of 1234’s)! I have a bunch more to do for the week, but this will have to do for now. It’s late and I have to wake up at an early-ish time for class. I hope next semester to only have afternoon classes so that I can sleep in.

GIF POWER! Aaaaaaaaand post ~~~~>
